Montgomery native Percy L. Julian was an internationally acclaimed chemist. The third African American to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry, he specialized in the chemistry of natural products and their synthesis in the laboratory. This technology is very important in medicines, food products, paints and fire-fighting foams, among other things. Julian received many awards, including election to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
