Mobile’s commitment to public health has been a component of the city’s illustrious history since its founding in 1702. The Board of Health was officially established in 1816 as the Mississippi Territory Board of Health and would become the first health department in Alabama when the state was founded in 1819. Since that time, services have been provided uninterrupted. Mobile’s Board of Health predates any other health department in Alabama by almost 100 years.
