The Wetumpka Crater in Elmore County is the result of an ancient meteoritic impact about 85 million years ago. The crescent-shaped ridge of hills rising up to 300 feet above the surrounding river plains measures 4.7 miles in diameter and is clearly visible to travelers entering Wetumpka on US Highway 231 and Alabama Highway 14.
