Pizitz was a family-owned chain of department stores founded in 1899 in Birmingham by Russian immigrant Louis Pizitz. At its peak, the chain boasted 12 stores, with nine in Birmingham and others located in several Alabama cities. The flagship store was located in the 7-story Pizitz building, completed in 1925 at 2nd Avenue North and 19th Street. Today the Pizitz building has a new presence housing residences, retail and a high-end food court.
