Founded in December 1916, the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company, or ADD-S-CO, was an important component of the maritime industry of Mobile for much of the twentieth century, helping to transform Mobile into a shipping and shipbuilding center for the Gulf Coast. During its peak during World War I and II, the company built and maintained U.S. Navy ships at the company’s two large dry docks on Pinto Island, just north of downtown.
