Mobile native Eugene Sledge was a United States Marine, University of Montevallo professor and author. He is best known for his World War Two memoir, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa. The work contains harrowing accounts of the horrors of war, as well as pride and admiration for his comrades.  Sledge’s honest portrayal earned him world-wide recognition from historians and veterans for penning one of the best first-hand accounts of combat in the Pacific during World War II.
